1st July: not much
Been concentrating on painting (acrylic) and colour. First a sketch prior to a painting (getting composition and basic tones).

Then after the painting there were problems around the nose. Not sure that this helps in that the tones are very bumpy (too much light in the shadow)

Finally the best of the figure sketches I've done from references this week.

15th June 2009: Tonal studies

8th June 2009: Copies of other drawings
Someone suggested copying master drawings rather than photos since they you are learning how to draw rather than using your current skills to copy a photo.
First a Robert Barrett, working with charcoal smudged in to give a mid tone and then add charcoal for the darks and using a putty rubber for the highlights.

Second a Henry Yan, was going OK until I switched from charcoal to compressed charcoal. Need to work out how not to get in a mess.

I think although the proportions were off I was happy with these. In particular both techniques give a wider range of tones than what I was previously doing.
