I thought I wouldn't have anything to post they were all feeble but the last two weren't so bad.

15th June 2009: Tonal studies

Some more studies using the same ideas as the Robert Barrett.



The second one has a few too many squiggles, need to simplify.

8th June 2009: Copies of other drawings

Someone suggested copying master drawings rather than photos since they you are learning how to draw rather than using your current skills to copy a photo.

First a Robert Barrett, working with charcoal smudged in to give a mid tone and then add charcoal for the darks and using a putty rubber for the highlights.




Second a Henry Yan, was going OK until I switched from charcoal to compressed charcoal. Need to work out how not to get in a mess.



I think although the proportions were off I was happy with these. In particular both techniques give a wider range of tones than what I was previously doing.

This weekend's sketches. Mostly rough but I'm trying to break down structure and not just draw the outlines. All about 30 minutes.






This was a bit different, just drawing the highlights on a low key photo.



Finally a more considered drawing, about 1 hour.

This weekend's sketches. Adding a touch of shading. Not particularly tidy though.
