Someone suggested copying master drawings rather than photos since they you are learning how to draw rather than using your current skills to copy a photo.
First a Robert Barrett, working with charcoal smudged in to give a mid tone and then add charcoal for the darks and using a putty rubber for the highlights.
Second a Henry Yan, was going OK until I switched from charcoal to compressed charcoal. Need to work out how not to get in a mess.
I think although the proportions were off I was happy with these. In particular both techniques give a wider range of tones than what I was previously doing.
