Tinted charcoal

Bought some tinted charcoal. Interesting texture, as the name suggests more like charcoal than pastel or even conte (harder). They do blend more like pastels though and they lift more easily (for corrections or highlights). Need more practice but they're interesting.

 

Then a couple of blocked shapes. Practicing terminators and foreshortening (had problems with a foreshortened face in a painting so I need practice).

 

 

Distractions

Too much work this week. Also, spent some time on a Wet canvas project on painting (a pastel). First a couple of structure ones, the first worked (partially) the second didn't.

 

Then a couple of the wet canvas subjects concentrating on tonal values.

 

 

This last one was also one of the Wetcanvas source photos. Although this was for a painting exercise the strong lighting and the pale model led to very little definition and a more linear figure. The model's physique and pose gives it a superhero (or rather heroine) appeal.

Structure

More structure this week. Need to apply this to the life sessions.

Couple of backs one male, one female.

 

Variety pack

Bits and bobs this week. First a Michelangelo study.

Then the usual A4 drawings, concentrating on structure and lighting.

Finally, an A2 practice for life. This was drawn using the envelope, block-in, contour method. The shading was a mistake.

Lots more this week, some were OK.

This was my favourite apart though her shoulder is too bulky.

This one was drawn after looking at 50s pinups. Trying to simplify which has worked but it doesn't look anything like the source photo.

Now the Michelangelos on A2 in a Terracotta felt tip pen. The proportions aren't right though the exercise was interesting, particularly trying to match the direction of his hatching (which was neater than mine).

 

Waiting for inspiration

A couple of weeks of lots of drawing but no real application. Unfortunately the first week of term was cancelled due to the weather so ended up doing more scribbles.

A couple for the painting: first A4 concentrating on the shoulders

Then an A2 charcoal. A bit heavy but I like the complexity of bones around the lumbar area.
